Yesterday evening I was fortunate to attend the #140conf in London Meetup. What a great night and so well organised by Bernie Mitchell (@BernieJMitchell) and his team. NOTE: If you haven’t hooked up with him yet…you NEED to
The evening was fantastic with speakers: Jeff Pulver (@jeffpulver Jeff’s Blog) – State of NOW, producer of the #140 conference; James Cox (@imajes) – Twitter and news gatherer (i.e. Breakingnews) and JP Rangaswami (@jobsworth) – Chief Scientist, BT Group – talking passionately about the emerging Real-Time internet and the effect it has on business.
Snippits of what you missed
The event was sandwiched by an amazing networking opportunity – a gathering of like minded individuals from various industries – all looking for that one golden nugget of information that would fill the void, or join the dots and pull everything together to make sense of the ‘engagement economy’ we’re fortunate to be living in. Personally, I left with more nuggets than McDonalds sold last year, and here are some of them:
Jeff gave an overview of the state of the internet and its effects on us and businesses whether we realised it or not, citing examples of:
- Information:- How in the past, ‘we’ searched for answers on Google abut now, as long as we’re connected, the information comes to us… And how with Twitter, when we post a statement and enough people start posting the same statement, all of a sudden the collective voice is heard
- Finance: – If you work in Finance, and you could actually make a ‘sure bet’ you could make a lot of money. And gave the example of if you new about an earthquake – but no-one else did or would for another 40 minutes, you could place a lot of bets on which industries would be affected by this …adversely
- Two forms of ROI (Return on Investment): Mentioning ROI and the way that agency clients should re-evealuate it and that it was the responsibility of the agencies to educate their clients on what metrics to monitor and how…. (see also ‘you can’t bend the return on involvement rules‘ & ‘Prescribing return on involvement for the new digital economy‘
- Chief Listening Officer: – One particular point he raised that was very powerful was when Jeff referenced Jeffrey Hayzlett, Chief Marketing Officer of Kodak, saying that every company should have a Chief Listening Officer, and that if an individual isn’t listening on behalf of their company then a) they should be fired and b) you can guarantee their competitors are listening!
There were many more nuggets, delivered by Jeff, JP and James…and I wanted to thank them for sharing them with us all, but this last one I’ll mention encapsulates where I think businesses are at the moment, and one to have in the back of our minds constantly:
If you happen to be a politician and you only use social media to get elected and don’t use it whilst elected – then you won’t get re-elected! Any politician, consumers… and even you… if you’re using social media platforms to make a point, but once you get to where you wanted to go, and then you stop using it, not only are you not authentic … you never were.
Wise words and a great event. If you want to go to the next #140 conf – the State of NOW – in Barcelona contact Jeff Pulver (@jeffpulver)… or click #140 conf Barcelona meetup
