“The intranet user interface, in this instance, doesn’t matter because it’s just an internal application used only by our employees. So just focus on what it needs to output and then make it secure”
This, unfortunately is something I hear over and over again. Somehow, when we start talking about internal collaborative applications all of a sudden considerations on the user interface and/or user experience doesn’t matter… And then we wonder why transitioning to social networking tools to aid in internal workflow collaboration meets with resitance!
Intranets should be developed and run in the same way external client/customer websites are; and we can’t forget that employees are also clients…
Business is fundamentally human
As the Cluetrain Manifesto book states “business is fundamentally human”, so we need to stop treating employees as “resources” and view them as clients; with their own interests, desires and motivators. Then once we’ve made this mind-shift, stating the business case for focusing on user experience for internal tools will be easier to support…
