Open Source Social Media Marketing (OS2M2) – and poached eggs!

by Lee Smallwood on November 27, 2009

Can I float something by you that I’ve been thinking about for some time…? I’ve chatted it through with a couple of people and their reactions were pretty positive…! But don’t let that sway you. What do you think?

If you look at the following definitions…:

1. Open Source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product’s source materials—typically, their source code. Some consider it as a philosophy, and others consider it as a pragmatic methodology.

[Source - Wikipedia]

2. Social Media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media uses Internet and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many).

[Source - Wikipedia]

3. Marketing is the process associated with promoting for sale goods or services. It is considered a “social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and values with others.”

[Source - Wikipedia]

… and combine them, would you get this:

Open Source Social Media Marketing (OS2M2)

The practice of planning, developing and promoting a product or service that meets the emotional and cognitive needs and wants for individuals, businesses and organisations because they’ve collaborated in the planning, development and promotional phases of said product or service. The results and findings of each phase are made available for public consumption,; for all to benefit from, reproduce, develop and further refine as they see fit – as long as their results and findings are made public for others to benefit from when undertaking other projects. – [Source - a dream I had - inspired by many]

or simply put, ‘Collaborative Commerce‘…

Is this where ‘we’ are heading…?

Controversial? Madness? Could it work? Needs refining? … You decide.

Social media – it’s evolving and the rest is up to us…

(for those interested in the ‘Poached Eggs’ bit – I put it in as it seemed like the only thing missing from the equation…!)

Ooo! I love the idea of collaborative commerce, where we all share for the greater good. Its not an new idea-rather a very old one-revamped for the modern age. I suspect this idea will appeal to women more than men, simply because it is in our general genetic make up as a species to share things for all to benefit, and, to talk things through for a solution. Companies are already having to move in this direction, it will be interesting to see just how much control they are willing to give up.

Oooh, that's a bit contraversial “I suspect this idea will appeal to women more than men, simply because it is in our general genetic make up as a species to share things for all to benefit, and, to talk things through for a solution.”

Are the gloves on? ;) Seriously though, do you think any men in a position to at least think about the benefits of collaborative commerce will at tleast think about it?

Would also be interested to read how you think this could benefit the property investment industry as a whole? Maybe that's an idea for a blog post – and get your network to pass on their thoughts to you…?
