Those that watch, those that make and those that wonder…

by Lee Smallwood on November 5, 2009

When I was 15 my Dad took me to one side and said, “Lee, there are 3 types of people in this world, do you know who they are?”

I rattled my brain and came back with, “thinkers talkers and doers Dad.” Said in a very pleased ‘I know where you’re coming from’ kind of voice…

“No.” he said. “Those that watch things happen, those that make things happen and those that wonder what the f**k happened – so which one are you?”

I remember feeling stunned, not because he mentioned the ‘F’ word (talking of which did you see it on Tuesday night?) but because I didn’t know. And why would I – I was 15. I’d only just figured out that puberty wasn’t a figment of my imagination, and my only thoughts were on girls, spot creams and how could I permanently change the colour of my hair! (Do all ginga’s think about that?)

I wasn’t ready to answer such deep questions. But then again, are we ever ready – not the battery – to answer such questions? After all, by doing so we potentially expose the ‘chinks in the armour’ so to speak. And for many, this exposure is one to avoid…

But I do reflect back on that ‘question’ he asked. I think of it pretty much everyday – almost like a mantra I suppose. And if he were to ask me that question today I’d say that it’s not for me to define, because if I did it would be purely subjective. And after all, who cares what I think?

Today, it’s how others define you that counts. Testimonials, re-tweets, recommendations, #followfriday (#follow any day for that matter!) referrals, blog comments etc are your defining moments.

So, who defines you? Make a list and thank them (in the comments below if you like) but do thank them! – as they’ve saved you an almost impossible task of trying to establish what makes you different and why people should ‘buy’ from you…
