Being brought up in the country I find it really fascinating that every time I come to the ‘big smoke’ (London) that no-one appears to smile – especially on tubes. People, it seems, will do almost anything to avoid making eye contact, maybe through fear that you’re some strange person (which they may have a point)
So I decided to conduct an experiment to see if I could get someone to smile back at me.
So with objective set as firmly as a jelly left in the fridge overnight, I set about to see if there would be a willing participant…
Much to my surprise I found my first person by purely accident, I bumped into them whilst checking to see if the train I was about to get on was in fact my train. I immediately apologised as I didn’t see her at all and she replied ‘that’s alright my love’. I smiled thanked her and she smiled back(!) Mission accomplished… So I kept smiling and walking at the same time and so did she – but she kept looking at me until she bumped into someone! She burst out laughing as did I and so did the bloke she bumped into. Then I noticed that the other people around us were also laughing. But you could see on their faces that they weren’t sure why?
It was great. Here we all were, a bunch of strangers all laughing. Marvelous. Mission objective smashed!
Then, just like steam, we evaporated in a different directions.
But for that brief moment we shared a perfect moment, laughing like long lost friends.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. My only regret was not getting everyone’s Facebook or Twitter address!!!
So if you were one of those people at Westminster Tube station heading for Canning Town at 8:35 this morning I’d love to hear from you
