the future of paid ads?
I think advertising is revolting(!) in both senses of the word! But in particular because they are trying to find ways to prevent us from skipping the adverts by placing them into programmes…
You can almost hear them around the board table, ‘Waheyyyy…. the goverment is allowing us to use placement ads, so no-one will be able to avoid them anymore. Call Simon, call Cheryl, call Louis, call Danni, call Oprah…”
But haven’t we reached the point where we can’t take on board anymore messages? My little brain is already exposed to 1000′s of ads per day – and I can’t remember any of them… Am I the only one…?
In fact the only ones I look out for are ones that I enjoy – ones like ComparetheMarket.com with Alexandr. But does it make me use that service? Not yet, but I do enjoy them
Whenever possible, I skip the TV adverts all together. But if placement ads start appearing this will mean that I can’t do that.
Will it mean that I skip the TV programme all together? Maybe… but if the ‘worst case scenario’ happens where TV presenters are drinking out of a particular ‘branded’ mug, dressed in similar overalls to those worn by formula one drivers covered in adverts with “To advertise in this space call…” written on their foreheads I probably will…
Will it eventually reach the state where everyday people get paid to wear branded clothing out in the street? Or paid to drop a particular named brand into conversation with our friends…?!?! Who knows. I already do it for Free because I want to. But perhaps I’m missing a trick here, maybe I should send monthly invoices out for the number of times I mention a particular brand or product…

Ooo! I so agree with you here Lee. This bit: “Will it eventually reach the state where everyday people get paid to wear branded clothing out in the street? Or paid to drop a particular named brand into conversation with our friends…?!?! Who knows.”
I saw something on the internet the other day where they are paying people to do just that! There is a web site ( whose name escapes me right now, unfortunately) where you can sign up to wear T Shirts and other stuff and then you go around talking to people about that brand. There have been stories of them recruiting taxi drivers to name drop in conversation already.grrrrr!
The question as you so rightly say is: Where is the line drawn as to how much is allowed? This is a whole can of worms waiting to spring free. Im emigrating!
I have a feeling that product placement would weaken the brand eventually via saturation overload.
