Ten top Twitter tips for councils – Blog response

by Lee Smallwood on July 31, 2009

Having read your article I don’t know whether it’s meant ‘tongue in cheek’ or whether it’s profoundly well errr profound…(!)

If it is, then it’s extremely funny and I think you’re (Adrian) a very talented individual… ;)

However if the “Some other Twitter stratgey tips” link from http://www.neilojwilliams.net to this page implies that these are actually ‘Tips’ then I hope you don’t mind if I challenge your opinion on a couple of your points…

1. “Forget about strategy” – The problem with this is that if an organisation has no strategy how does twitter fit into aits overall social media strategy!? I agree with Rex that points 2-5 are the ’start’ of a strategy but need to dig deeper in to estalishing goals, metrics, rules etc (see http://tinyurl.com/mo82p4 for a really good example of a twitter strategy that can be used as a model)

6. “Don’t answer back” – Why would anyone bother to follow someone if they are not willing to engage with them…?

7. “Don’t follow your readers” see answer to 6

8. “It’s all about you” – Can I disagree with you on this point… I believe it’s actually all about everyone else. e.g. I don’t believe that I’m important in the equation or the grand scheme of things. But hopefully some of the information I come across whilst browsing and decide to tweet about might be helpful to other people. I know that some of the tweets I read have taught me a lot…

9 & 10… hmmmmm … I’d better not write anymore becasue I don’t want to come across like I’m criticising – as the above is purely meant as a critique ;)

Happy to be challenged… :)
